Route

Road route ↻1100km ⇗12500m

To put this rondo on the map, draw a circle around the heart of Britain - more than 700 miles, two countries, five thousand years of history.

To put this loop on the map, you’ll pass numerous beautiful cycling highlights along the way. Starting at Avebury Stone Circle, you’ll cycle east through England, passing places including the Chilterns, Wimpole Hall and Gardens, Earith Lakes, Huddersfield Victoria Tower, and Marsden Moor.

Once you’ve crossed the Mersey by ferry at Liverpool and entered Wales a little farther on, the route really starts to climb, taking in Halkyn Mountain, Moel Famau, Moel Arthur, Lake Vyrnwy, Bwlch y Groes — the highest paved mountain pass in Wales — Moel Famau, Llyn Clywedog, Graig Gogh Lake, Caban Coch, Epynt, and Blorenge.

At the Severn Bridge near Bristol, you return to England for the final stretch back to Avebury Stone Circle.

After 700 miles / 1100km (road route) or 750 miles / 1200km (gravel route) in the saddle, you arrive back in Avebury. The loop is complete!

Narrow tires? That’s absolutely fine! The route is entirely on paved roads.

Gravel bike? Then take the gravel route, which is mostly unpaved and runs along byways, forest tracks, and the roughest gravel roads in Wales and England.

The Event

700 Miles Race
Early on Saturday morning, just after sunrise, we’ll set off from the historic Avebury Stone Circle to trace a circle on the map that’s 1,000 times larger. There are 3 checkpoints along the way to collect a stamp and refuel.

The finish closes after 156 hours, on Friday evening of the 7th day. Complete the circle in time to claim your reward patch with the final stamp, and enjoy a well-earned finisher’s beer.

Riders competing for the rankings can ride solo or in pairs, fully self-supported according to the usual ultra-cycling rules.

Route choice: Road or Gravel (±50% off-road, and 50 miles longer).

What points of interest are there along the route?

The gravel route consists of 50% unpaved/gravel sections. We recommend a gravel bike/MTB with tires at least 50/60 mm wide. Front suspension is a worthwhile extra.

The road route runs entirely on paved roads.
